SC State's Weekly Executive Speaker Series resumes Jan. 24

ORANGEBURG, SC – The College of Business and Applied Professional Sciences at SC State will kick off its Spring 2007 Executive Speaker Series on Wednesday, Jan. 24.

The Executive Speaker Series is a partnership between participating companies and the business program. It supports the college’s mission to provide quality management education and leadership to produce competitive graduates for a global and diverse environment.

Past participants have come from a wide array of companies and industries, including Pfizer Inc., Springs Industries, Bowater Inc., Ernst & Young, BellSouth, Black Enterprise, SCANA, Sonoco, Bank of America, Johnson Controls, Milliken & Company and the FDIC.

The first speaker for the Spring 2007 Executive Speaker Series will be Dr. Robert T. Barrett, the new dean of the College of Business and Applied Professional Sciences.

Prior to his recent appointment at SC State, Barrett served as associated dean of the School of Business and Palmetto Professor of Management at Francis Marion University. During his tenure, he also directed the MBA Program and served as associate provost.

Barrett’s teaching and research interests include management science, statistics and operations management. His latest research has focused on regional economic development, including projects studying impacts of demographic, economic, and interstate travel on the South Carolina Education Lottery, and the impacts of increasing state excise cigarette taxes on the health and economy of the state.

Barrett has published scholarly papers in journals including the International Journal of Computers and Operations Research, Production and Inventory Management Journal, Simulation, Journal of Travel and Tourism Management, Coastal Business Review, Summer Academe, Southern Business Review, and Palmetto Review. He is a regular contributor as a reviewer for Decision Sciences and the International Journal of Computers and Operations Research. He serves on the executive board for the Southeastern Chapter of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (SE INFORMS) and as president-elect of the Southeast Chapter of the Decision Sciences Institute (SE DSI).

Barrett earned a Ph.D. in management science from Virginia Tech, MBA from East Carolina University and a bachelor of science in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The Executive Speaker Series was implemented in the core curriculum of the School of Business in 1996 as a component of the Leadership and Professional Development Program, which all business majors are required to complete. The series exposes students to various aspects of the workplace, including viewpoints of leaders who are on the cutting edge of business, industry and government.
