Lumus Byrd Jr. was elected as the new chairman of the South Carolina State University Board of Trustees.
“I’m thankful for the trust my colleagues have in me,” said Byrd after the election.
The Rev. Dr. John Corbitt was tapped to be the new vice chairman while Robert Nance, will be the secretary.
The trio will serve two-year terms at those positions starting on July 1.
Current Chairman Maurice Washington congratulated Byrd. “You’ve worked hard to win this great honor.”
Byrd is an S.C. State alumnus and has served on the board since 2006. Last year, he was awarded the Order of the Silver Crescent by Gov. Mark Sanford. He also was named freshman trustee of the year on the S.C. State board.
Corbitt has been on the board since 2001 and is one of its longest-serving members. He is a minister at Springfield Baptist Church in Greenville.
Nance is the son of former S.C. State President Dr. M. Maceo Nance and works as U.S. Congressman Jim Clyburn’s district director.
