Dr. Rodell Lawrence has joined the SC State family as the Assistant Vice President for Alumni Relations. Lawrence will be responsible for overseeing Alumni Relations as well as leverage his corporate and foundation connections to increase fundraising at the University.
Lawrence has fund raising experience in the areas of corporate, alumni, foundation, and annual giving along with organization and individual giving.
Lawrence is a 1970 alumnus of SC State. He received a bachelor of science Degree in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Mathematics. He received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from SC State in 1992.
In 1967, Lawrence was drafted in the US Army and spent a tour of duty in combat in the Republic of South Vietnam.
Lawrence was employed at North American Rockwell in Columbus, Ohio as a research engineer where he was credited with a US patent for his work in the development of a cold gas actuation system for tactical missiles. From there he began a 22-year career at Xerox as a senior executive. He was chosen as one of 20 best minds in the Company and was placed in a (think tank) group for three years, with the responsibility for re-engineering the Company, resulting in a $1.2 billion in cost saving improvements.
Lawrence also sat on Xerox’s philanthropic board that gave $25 to $30 million dollars a year to community agencies and colleges/ universities. He was responsible for making sure HBCU’s got their fair share of unrestricted funds and as a result, approximately $5 to $6 million was given each year to schools such as SC State, FAMU, Atlanta University Center schools, Southern University, NC A&T, Tuskegee, and Howard University.
“We are excited to have Dr. Lawrence as part of our team,” said Dr. Jackie Epps, interim vice president for institutional advancement. “He brings a wealth of experience and has been instrumental in a number of corporate fundraising activities that has benefited the University.”
Lawrence has membership in several organizations, including Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc, and has received numerous awards and recognitions, to include the SC State Benjamin E. Mayes Distinguished Alumnus Award.
He is married to Cedar (Evans) Lawrence and they have 5 children- Christopher, Debora, Ashlyn, Biram and Raegena.
