SC State entered the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Div. I-AA) top 25 poll for the first time this season and the first time since the 2005 campaign.
Coach Buddy Pough’s team is number 24 in the latest 2008 FCS Coaches Poll, which is based exclusively on a voting panel of head coaches in the FCS under the cooperation of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and is administered by the Southern Conference. Two head coaches from each of the 14 FCS conferences participate in the voting.
SC State, 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for a virtual tie with Hampton for first place in the league, was last ranked nationally in a major poll in 2005 when the Bulldogs finished 9-2.
Pough’s team is one of the two MEAC teams and among three HBCU squads ranked in the FCS Coaches Poll. Hampton, whom SC State hosts in an MEAC showdown for first place Saturday, is number 22, while Tennessee State of the Ohio Valley Conference, is at number 19.
The Bulldogs, coming off a bye week, are also ranked in several other polls. SC State is number two in the Sheridan Broadcasting Network Black College poll, fourth in the Box-to-Row Black College poll and number 26 in The Sports Network FCS rankings.
