SC State Chapter of NAACP host Centennial Anniversary

Monday, February 09, 2009

SC State National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Chapter celebrates its centennial anniversary on Monday, Feb.9-12, 2009 at the Barbara A. Vaughn Fine Arts Center. This year’s theme is “Walking into 100 years of Excellence, Power and Justice.”

On Feb. 12, 1909, The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded by a multiracial group of activists, who answered "The Call." They initially called themselves the National Negro Committee. For over 100 years, the NAACP has been built on the individual and collective courage of thousands of people.

“I am honored to be a part of an organization that has served the African American community for 100 years, an organization that will fight until justice is served,” said Preston Zimmerman, president of the NAACP, SC State chapter.

NAACP objectives are the following:

  • To ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of all citizens
  • To achieve equality of rights and eliminate race prejudice among the citizens of the United States
  • To remove all barriers of racial discrimination through democratic processes
  • To seek enactment and enforcement of federal, state, and local laws securing civil rights
  • To inform the public of the adverse effects of racial discrimination and to seek its elimination
  • • To educate persons as to their constitutional rights and to take all lawful action to secure the exercise thereof, and to take any other lawful action in furtherance of these objectives, consistent with the NAACP's Articles of Incorporation and this Constitution
