SC State will host executive speaker Edward Sellers, on Wednesday, Feb.18, 2009 at noon. Sellers discussion topic will be “The Health Care Industry: Present and Future" in the Belcher Hall fourth floor auditorium.
Sellers is the chairman and CEO of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina (BBSC), and is responsible for general management of the various businesses of BlueCross, BlueShield and Companion, including health insurance, administrative services contracting, Medicare intermediary functions, Department of Defense TRICARE intermediary functions, a life insurance company, a property and casualty insurance company, computer technology businesses, and an HMO. The Company’s $3.5 billion portfolio has more than 13,000 employees who are located in 11 states.
From 1978 – 1987, Sellers was senior vice president of the BlueCross and BlueShield Association, Chicago, Ill. He has also worked for Westinghouse Electric Corporation, Pittsburg, Pa. and Cleveland, OH; and the Boston Consulting Group, Boston, Mass.
Sellers has served as chairman of the Columbia College Board of Trustees, chairman of the Palmetto Conservation Foundation Board of Directors and as a member of the Central Carolina Community Foundation Board of Directors and the University of South Carolina School of Public Health Board. His current memberships include: chairman of the South Carolina Council of Competitiveness, the Palmetto Business Forum (Chairman 2003 – 2004); the Palmetto Institute (vice chairman), South Carolina State Chamber Board of Directors (chairman – 2001); ETV Endowment of South Carolina, Inc. Board of Trustees (past chair); the National Institute of HealthCare Management (NIHCM) Board, the National Bank of South Carolina Board of Directors and Spoleto Festival USA Board of Directors.
Sellers received a bachelors of arts degree in physics from Vanderbilt University and a masters of administration degree from Harvard School of Business.
In 2008, Sellers (with wife, Dr. Suzan D. Boyd), was named United Way of the Midlands ‘Humanitarian of the Year’ and in 2002 named ‘Business Leader of the Year’ by the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the College of Charleston.
