SC State Women and Men Win 2009 MEAC Tennis Titles

The South Carolina State women’s and men’s teams captured the 2009 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tennis Championship titles at the Millbrook Tennis Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Florida A&M Rattlers, 4-1, en route to their fifth consecutive MEAC title and sixth overall. South Carolina State won the number two doubles match 8-2, while Florida A&M won at the number three doubles 8-5.Tied at one-all, the South Carolina State duo of Daria Sekerina and Aniko Kiss topped Florida A&M’s Rachel Pye and Latreece Olagbegi to win the point for the Lady Bulldogs.

South Carolina State followed with singles wins at the number two, three and six positions. Pye won the lone point for Florida A&M with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the number singles spot.

South Carolina State’s Torres recorded a 3-0 mark at the number three singles position and 2-0 mark in doubles play and was named the Outstanding Performer. The Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach Hardeep Judge was named the Outstanding Coach for the fifth time on the women’s side.

In men’s action, South Carolina State topped the Hampton Pirates, 4-0, to win their eighth MEAC crown. The Bulldogs won the doubles points and followed with wins at the number one, three and five singles positions. South Carolina State’s David Grund defeated Hampton’s Gabriel Groh at the number five spot 6-3, 6-3 to secure the victory.

South Carolina State’s Ivan Milivojevic earned Outstanding Performer accolades after finishing with 3-0 record at the number one singles position and leading his team to the title. Judge was named the Outstanding Coach for the men’s team for the fifth time in his career.

With the wins, both teams receive automatic qualifications to the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Championship. Team selections will be announced on ESPNews on April 28, 2009.
