Scotty Peek, assistant professor of Art in SC State’s department of Visual and Performing Arts is currently participating in an artist in residence program at The Studios of Key West in Key West, Fla.
The Studios of Key West is a non-profit cultural organization with a mission to support the island's creative community, the development of artists and audiences and new partnerships near and far. The Studios of Key West is located at the historic Key West Armory building.
During the two-week residency, The Studios of Key West offers artists an environment conducive to creating works of art without the distraction of everyday life. They provide working facilities to foster a visiting artist’s best work.
Peek currently resides in a small cottage on the island and produces art in a public studio.
“I'm very impressed with what The Studios of Key West does for the local community. It introduces a diverse selection of arts from all over the world into an otherwise isolated island,” said Peek. “Being in residence here gives artists and the community a better chance of understanding each other,” continued Peek.
Peek is excited about meeting new artists from near and afar and continues to learn various artistic techniques through the sharing of ideas.
"I'm proud to represent SC State through my artistic activities. When I'm introduced to locals and other artists here, it is usually mentioned that I teach at SC State. The more visible our faculty is outside of campus, the more the reputation of the University and its Visual Arts department grows."
