Tuskegee University President and SC State Alumnus, Dr. Benjamin F. Payton,’55 will deliver the principal address from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to rededicate it in honor of the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth.
Payton, a nationally recognized higher education leader, orator, scholar, ethicist, and public intellectual will present the principal address at the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, May 30, 2009, at approximately 2 p.m.
The Memorial, which millions of tourists visit each year, was built to honor the 16th President of the United States. It is located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The rededication event will serve as the culmination of a three-part series of events held at the Memorial in the bicentennial year.
The inaugural dedication of the Lincoln Memorial was held on May 30, 1922, and the principal address was given by Dr. Robert Russa Moton, the second President of Tuskegee University. The event is scheduled to broadcast on C-SPAN. Check your local listings for details.
