SC State will increase tuition by 8.4%

Thursday, June 04, 2009

This afternoon, during their annual retreat, the Board of Trustees of SC State University has decided to increase tuition. The 8.4 percent increase will raise $3,493,822 for the 2009-2010 academic year.

“This has been an extremely tough financial year for SC State,” said Dr. George E. Cooper, president, SC State. “Increases in tuition were not what we wanted to do, but had to, to ensure the continued success of SC State,” Cooper continued.

SC State’s tuition will increase from $7,806 to $8,460 per year for in-state students (16,628 out-of-state), an increase of $654 per full-time student taking 12 or more credit hours. SC State raised tuition by 5.3 percent in 2008-09 and there was no tuition increase 2007-08.

Also, in an effort to maintain modern, safe, and enjoyable, living and learning environments on SC State’s campus, there is a significant need to upgrade older residence halls. In order to purchase new furniture, repaint, improve lighting, among other amenities, a housing fee increase was necessary. The SC State Board of Trustees voted to increase the fee for on-campus housing. Still the lowest housing fee among peer institutions, SC State’s lowest priced residence hall will cost $2,500, and the most expensive will cost $3,000 per semester.

The 2009-2010 student meal plan will also increase by 3.5%.

During the past two years, there has been significant reduction in state appropriations to SC State. In fiscal year 2008, SC State experienced a $2.5 million reduction and during this past year, fiscal year 2009, the University experienced an additional $5.2 million reduction in state funds totaling $7.7 million.

In an effort to offset those reductions, President Cooper and the administration imposed cost saving measures to include: a hiring freeze on all positions (except those critical to the operation of the University), reduction in travel, elimination of professional staff development for 2008-2009, reduction in purchasing supplies and other operating costs, and a seven-day furlough.

The Board’s annual retreat will end on Friday, June 5, 2009. SC State’s Board of Trustees will hold their next regularly scheduled meeting in September 2009. Newly appointed Board Member Matthew Richardson’s term will begin on July 1, 2009.
