SC State's Student Success and Retention Program will host 2009 Summer Orientation

Tuesday, June 09, 2009

SC State will host its 2009 summer orientation beginning Monday, June 22 through Thursday, June 25 according to Terrence Cummings, assistant executive director of Student Success and Retention.

New students and their parents will attend summer orientation sessions specifically designed for them by the University’s three degree-granting colleges and the Student Success and Retention program.

During summer orientation, new students will have the opportunity to meet their college deans, department chairs and other faculty members, register for fall semester classes, secure residential life assignments, take their SC State photo identification cards and receive user passwords, and learn about essential campus resources, policies and procedures to help students chart a course of success.

Cummings says, “SC State is fully committed to providing lifelong learning for qualified students of varied talents and backgrounds in a caring and nurturing learning environment. This campus integrated approach to student success purports to increase retention rates and will ultimately help students transition from orientation to graduation.”

The Student Success and Retention program will host undecided majors on Monday, June 22; the College of Business and Applied Professional Sciences on Tuesday, June 23; the College of Education, Humanities, and Social Sciences on Wednesday, June 24; the College of Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Technology on Thursday, June 25. The activities run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

As a part of each of these one-day programs, SC State will also conduct “Parents in College 101.” This parallel activity runs concurrently with student summer orientation and provides parents with the opportunity to learn more about the University and ensures that parents have information to help students get the most out of the SC State experience.
