The glow of international acclaim is shining brightly on SC State’s chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society. The chapter has been recognized for exemplary achievement in academic excellence, leadership, service, and for the first-time received the Gold Award at the 2009 Golden Key International Honour Society Conference recently held in Orlando, Fla.
The GOLD Award designation is based on a chapter’s ability to meet certain international chapter standards and activities, in the categories of Integrity, Collaboration, Innovation, Respect, Diversity, Excellence, Engagement, and Reporting.
The premier collegiate honor society, Golden Key International Honour Society was founded in 1977 on the campus of Georgia State University in Atlanta, Ga. The global non-profit organization provides academic recognition, leadership opportunities, community service, career networking and scholarship opportunities. The society has nearly 350 chapters at colleges and universities in the United States, Australia, Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand and South Africa.
SC State’s Golden Key International Honour Society chapter executive board members for the 2008-09 academic year were: W. Matt Wooten, president; Frank Richardson, vice president; Kyle Bowrin, recording secretary; Venetia Lyles, treasurer; Kathlyn Stephenson, chaplin; Treasure Holland, corresponding secretary; Taurean Hutchinson, activities director. All executive members were graduating seniors. During the 2008-2009 academic year, 45 students were formally inducted into the society, bringing the chapter’s total to 65 members.
Mary M. White has served as the SC State Golden Key Chapter advisor for the Office of Honors, International and National Student Exchange Programs for the past two years. White attended both the Golden Key Regional and International Conferences this year. At the conferences, advisors and student members participated in workshops, service learning projects, community service projects, advisor trainings, and leadership activities.
“I cannot accept all the glory. If it were not for the commitment of the graduating 2008-2009 Golden Key executive board, honorary members, previous advisors, prospective members, current and alumni members all working together to make the chapter successful, this award would not have been possible,” said White. “Special thanks to each and everyone who allow the chapter to finally receive this prestigious award,” she continued.
In 2004, the SC State Golden Key International Honour Society was also presented the prestigious Key Chapter Award for being, one of the most outstanding chapters internationally for excellence in five major areas: communication, publicity, meeting management, chapter activities and leadership.
SC State’s Golden Key International Honour Society was chartered on April 28, 2002. Since then, the chapter has been committed to high academic achievement, community service, service learning, leadership and excellence. Since its chartering, the SC State’s Golden Key Chapter has inducted 309 undergraduates and 30 honorary members who represent distinguished administrators, faculty, staff and civic leaders.
Membership is open to the top 15 percent academically of all sophomores, juniors and seniors who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
Membership is by invitation only to students in all academic fields.
