SC State University announces that Dr. Leonard A. McIntyre has been reassigned to serve as Special Assistant to the President for International Affairs and Director of the Textbooks and Learning Materials Program. In this position, he will report directly to the President and serve as a liaison with the Cabinet. He will work as a facilitator in areas related to international development which will assist in advancing the mission of SC State. Through collaborations with the Cabinet, he will work across divisions to enhance our capacity in international areas. He will work through the president in expanding goals appropriate to internationalization of program activities for the University.
“Dr. McIntyre’s passion for international affairs, and the wealth of University knowledge that he has, will support SC State’s international programs and initiatives,” said President George E. Cooper.
Dr. McIntyre serves as the project director for a $13 million grant awarded to SC State entitled “Textbooks and Learning Materials Program (TLMP)” secured through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The TLMP is an agreement between SC State and USAID to develop, print and distribute at least 2,250,000 textbooks and other educational learning materials in biology, chemistry and physics, and mathematics for Zanzibar, and Mainland Tanzania, East Africa, by August 31, 2012.
Prior to coming to SC State, Dr. McIntyre served as the state deputy superintendent, in the Division of Professional Development and School Quality for the S.C. Department of Education.
Dr. McIntyre has more than 30 years of education and administration experience. Prior to his position with the S.C. Department of Education, he served as District Superintendent of Education for Hampton School District 2, where he provided leadership in developing and maintaining educational programs and services.
Dr. McIntyre has participated in leadership training programs at Harvard University, Columbia Teachers College, and is a graduate of the Center for Creative Leadership Inc.
He serves extensively in civic, social service, and community organizations both nationally and internationally, including Tanzania, China, India, Spain and Vera Cruz, Mexico.
Dr. McIntyre is a native of New Orleans, La. He received his bachelor’s degree in Spanish education from Loyola University; his master’s degree from Tulane University; and a Ph.D. in educational administration from Iowa State University. He and his wife Gail are the proud parents of one daughter, Lauren.
