ORANGEBURG, SC – The South Carolina State men and women’s basketball teams hope to improve their standings in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Saturday when they travel to Washington, DC for a league doubleheader at Howard.
Tip off at Burr Gymnasium is 2 p.m. for the women’s game, with the men’s contest to follow at 4 p.m.
In the women’s matchup, SC State (5-15, 3-7 MEAC) will be trying for a sweep over Howard (2-17, 2-7 MEAC). In an earlier meeting at Orangeburg Jan. 6, the Lady Bulldogs prevailed 75-60.
Both teams are coming off victories in their last outings on Monday. SC State snapped a three-game losing streak with a last-second 50-48 victory over Norfolk State. Howard, meanwhile, which lost its first 16 contests, defeated Morgan State 74-67 for its second win in its last four outings.
Coach Tonya Mackey’s team will be paced by freshman Sophilia Hipps (12.4 ppg) and JUCO Brittany Baity (10.2 ppg).
Leading the way for Howard will be Carlisle Shannon (14.6 ppg) and Christina Aden (10.2).
In the men’s contest, both the Bison and visiting Bulldogs will be trying to rebound from losses on Monday. SC State (7-13, 5-5 MEAC) dropped a 62-56 decision to visiting Norfolk State, while Howard (7-14, 3-6 MEAC) also suffered a home defeat, losing 66-53 to Morgan State, a team which handed the Bulldogs one of their five MEAC losses.
The SC State men would earn a sweep of this season’s series with a victory on Saturday. In a Jan. 6 encounter at Orangeburg, the Bulldogs held on for a 51-45 win over the Bison.
The Bulldogs will be powered by seniors Brian Mason (12.8 ppg, 5.4 rpg) and Travis Jones (12.6 ppg).
Leading the way for the Bison will be Eugene Myatt (16.6 ppg) and Darryl Hudson (16.0 ppg, 6.3 rpg).
Following Saturday’s action, SC State will travel to Princess Anne, MD to take on Maryland-Eastern Shore Monday in another MEAC doubleheader, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
