Education

The Education Program is designed to the transportation theme of the Center, “Professional Capacity Building.” Through its “Transportation Education Pipeline”, the South Carolina State University/ James E. Clyburn University Transportation Center assists academic divisions and departments with implementing a multi-disciplinary program of course work and experiential learning. The education program includes an undergraduate minor concentration in transportation, educational materials for grades K-12, training, workshops, and a Master of Science Degree in Transportation.

Undergraduate Minor
South Carolina State University, through the School of Engineering Technology - Department of Civil and Mechanical, offers an undergraduate minor concentration in transportation. To earn the minor concentration in transportation, students must successfully complete at least four of six core transportation-related courses. A minor concentration in transportation gives a student an option of pursing graduate school or seeking transportation-related employment in the public or private sector. Recent college and graduate school graduates have been employed at local, state and federal agencies throughout the country. In addition, some graduates were recruited and employed by major private transportation companies nationally. The interdisciplinary focus of the minor allows students to choose from a variety of courses that compliments their interests (i.e. economics, finance, logistics, administration and management, engineering, and GIS etc). Upon admission to the university, the student should contact the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering Technology at 803 536-7117 for additional information.

Master of Science in Transportation
The Master of Science Degree in Transportation Program at South Carolina State University is located in the School of Engineering Technology and Sciences. The degree program prepares students to understand the historical, current and future trends and developments in transportation systems from an interdisciplinary perspective. Additionally, students are prepared to design, analyze, implement and evaluate new and emerging concepts, skills and workplace behaviors in addressing transportation as a major system in improving the quality of life of citizens globally, nationally, state-wide and locally.

The interdisciplinary Master of Science Degree in Transportation (MST) is planned in concert with the collaborative strengths within the University to provide appropriate education, research, and practical experiences for graduates of the program.
