The National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) is funded by the U. S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The NSTI provides career orientation and educational experiences to motivate secondary school students toward professions in the field of transportation. Participants spend four weeks on some of the most prestigious college/university campuses in the country.
The concept for the National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) originated at South Carolina State University (SC State) in 1993 as a pilot project through the cooperative efforts of SCSU, the S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT), and the FHWA South Carolina Division Office. In 1999, the NSTI became the first transportation education program for secondary school students to be authorized by Congress in the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century.
The NSTI Resource Center takes the lead in working with colleges and universities and partners to achieve the NSTI mission: To contribute to the development of a diverse, well-qualified workforce for the transportation industry by encouraging secondary school students to pursue transportation careers.
