The primary challenges with responding to an Active Shooter event on campus are twofold. First, the event unfolds rapidly and a tremendous amount of damage is inflicted before law enforcement can arrive on the scene. Second, the Active Shooter has no regard for personal safety; the shooter expects to be killed by responding law enforcement or intends to commit suicide once he has achieved his goal; as evidenced by the Columbine High School and Virginia Tech shootings. University employees must be trained in appropriate responses to save themselves and others from injury or death and not be left to fend for themselves in a state of panic. Upon completing this training, employees will be able to: 1) Describe actions to take when confronted with an active shooter and responding law enforcement officials;
2) Recognize potential workplace violence indicators; 3) Describe actions to take to prevent and prepare for potential active shooter incidents; 4) Describe how to manage the consequences of an active shooter incident; 5) List measures that can be employed to reduce the effectiveness of an active shooter, and 6) Describe actions that can be expected from responding law enforcement officers.
