Points of Emphasis for Graduates May 2019

The Graduation Line of March will begin at 5:30pm on Friday, May 10, 2019. The Commencement Ceremony is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm on Friday, May 10, 2019.

Friday, February 15, 2019 - Last day to apply “Late” for May 2019 Graduation (August 1 – October 31, 2018) was the graduation filing period for May 2019 graduation.

Graduation Rehearsal
Graduation Rehearsal is scheduled for Thursday morning, May 9, 2019 at 8:30 a.m. in the Oliver C. Dawson Stadium. Please be present and on time.

Diplomas will be issued in Staley Hall immediately after the Commencement Ceremony. Degree candidates must present your Campus ID to receive your diploma. Candidates, who may have questions concerning Commencement should contact the Registrar’s Office at 803-536-7185.

Alumni Weekend Activities
Alumni who may have questions regarding Alumni Weekend activities should contact Mrs. Ava Gardner at 803-516-4616. Attire - Bookstore

Female graduates are asked to wear black dresses. Male graduates are asked to wear black slack and white shirts. Special Note: Only University Official caps, gowns, hoods and other academic regalia accessories purchased through the University Bookstore are permitted in Commencement Ceremony.

Application for Degrees

Undergraduate and Graduate

Applying for graduation is a university degree requirement for all prospective graduates.   The application must be filed in the term prior to expected degree completion term. .  The date of graduation will be recorded for the term of completion.

Failure to clear for graduation will require the degree candidate to reapply for graduation and payment of another graduation fee for the next subsequent Commencement. All applications for the degrees must be submitted to the Registrar's Office not later than the date set forth in the University calendar.

It is the responsibility of the student to do the following:

  1. Perform a Curriculum, Advising, and Program Planning (CAPP) degree audit  in Bulldog Connection  to track your degree requirements
  2. Schedule an appointment with your advisor to review all degree requirements
  3. Complete an undergraduate or graduate application for graduation with your department
  4. Pay your graduation fee in the Cashier’s Office
  5. You must submit your graduation application with proof of payment to the Registrar’s Office on or before the Graduation Fee Payment Deadline.


Attendance at Commencement" 

Attendance at the Ceremony is required of all candidates for degrees unless you have extenuating circumstances that will prevent you from participating in the ceremony.

Commencement Date and Ceremony 

SC State will host the 2019 Spring Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 10, 2019 in the Oliver C. Dawson Stadium. The Line of March (Processional) will begin at 5:30p.m. and the Commencement Ceremony will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Commencement Participation Policy 

All Students

Students will not be eligible to participate in a Commencement Ceremony unless all degree requirements have been completed prior to participation. In addition, students will NOT be allowed to participate in commencement if they have NOT submitted their graduation application forms to the Registrar’s Office by the deadline listed on the University Calendar.  Students who miss this deadline must apply for the next commencement ceremony.  For example, if a student completes degree requirements in May, but did not submit a graduation application by the posted deadline for May commencement, that student CANNOT participate in the May commencement.  In order to participate in commencement, that student MUST apply for the December graduation. .

NOTE: An application for graduation is COMPLETE only after it has been submitted to the Registrar’s Office.

All prospective graduates must file an Application for Graduation and pay the required fee. The Application for Graduation must be filed in the term prior to the term of degree completion by the date noted on the Academic Calendar. The Application for Graduation is not considered filed until the graduation fee is paid and a Graduation Application is submitted to the Registrar’s Office. Students who apply late for graduation will be charged a $25.00 late fee.

Student Responsibility – Undergraduate and Graduate Students: 
Students are responsible for the completion of their academic program, based upon the requirements stated in the University Catalog. The advisor is available to counsel, but the responsibility to ensure all degree completion remains with the student.

Graduation Clearance 

Graduation Information is available to all students who applied for graduation and it does not imply that you have been approved or cleared for graduation. If you are cleared for graduation, you will not receive any more communication from the Registrar’s Office. However, if you are not cleared, you will receive notification as soon as that determination has been made.

Magna Cum Laude 3.50 - 3.74

Guest Tickets  

Each candidate for graduation will receive 5 tickets for guests in case of inclement weather. Each guest must have a ticket to enter Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center for the ceremony. You will only receive guest tickets during graduation rehearsal.

Graduating Students: Final Exams and Final Grades 

Final examinations for graduating students are May 2-3, 2019. Please ensure that a final grade is reported for each course that you are taking this semester by checking Bulldog Connection. A grade that is not reported will delay your graduation clearance. For a missing grade, please contact your instructor immediately for a missing grade to be reported to the Registrar’s Office.

Transfer Courses

Students, who are currently taking courses at other institutions to complete requirements for graduation, must have official transcripts or official statements of the grades earned sent from the Registrar’s Office of that institution by May 3, 2019 to: Mrs. Felicia McMillan, Acting Registrar, South Carolina State University, P. O. Box 8104, Orangeburg, SC 29117-0001. An official transcript must be on file before transfer credits are posted on a student’s transcript.
