SC State's New Student Orientation Sessions 2008

Wednesday, June 18, 2008

SC State will continue with its new approach to summer orientation that it begun last year for students attending the University in Fall 2008.

“New students and their parents will attend summer orientations specifically designed for them by the University’s three colleges,” said Terrence Cummings, assistant executive director for Student Success and Retention.

This year, summer orientations will be held during the week of June 23-27, beginning 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The College of Business and Applied Professional Sciences will host new students on Monday, June 23, the College of Education, Humanities, and Social Sciences on Tuesday, June 24; the College of Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Technology on Wednesday, June 25; and Undecided/Undeclared Students on Thursday, June 26.

According to Cummings, “New students will attend one full day and meet their college dean, department chair and other faculty as well as secure their fall semester classes, secure residential life housing assignments, receive their username and password, and learn about essential campus resources to help them chart their courses of success from “orientation to graduation.”

As part of each of the one-day programs, SC State will run a parallel activity, “Parents in College 101,” that provides parents with the opportunity to learn about SC State resources, policies and procedures as well,” he explained

Cummings also indicates that the University is currently in the process of using a new system for student records and in some cases there are a few delays. “We apologize for the inconvenience and reassure students and parents that the new system will create greater efficiency as the University works through the challenges,” said Cummings.
