Shooting at SC State University - Update

Friday, January 24, 2014

At this time, we can confirm that there has been a fatal shooting of a South Carolina State University student.

Orangeburg County Coroner Samuetta Marshall notified campus officials just moments ago that the victim has been pronounced dead at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

Because next of kin have not been notified, we cannot release the identity of the victim.

The campus lockdown has been lifted. However, persons entering the campus will only be allowed to enter and exit through Gate 5 (Chestnut Street). Police continue their search for the suspects they believe were involved in the shooting.

We have been able to identify at least one person of interest. Due to the fact that this is an ongoing investigation, we are not releasing that person’s identity. We still don’t know a motive for the shooting.

Students are safe. The perimeter of the campus is secure. Members of the campus community are asked to remain alert and report any suspicious activity.

At this time, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has taken the lead on this investigation. Meantime, South Carolina State University police department, Orangeburg Public Safety Chief Wendell Davis, and the Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell have committed to continue to provide support and information to aid in the investigation.

Police still don’t know the identities of the remaining suspects. We will continue to give you updates as they become available.
