SC State to remain closed Monday

SC State University will remain closed Monday, Sept. 11, as the state of South Carolina is expected to be impacted by Hurricane Irma. No decision has yet been made regarding classes and the resumption of university operation on Tuesday, Sept. 12.

The National Weather Service has high confidence that Orangeburg County, in which SC State University is located, will experience tropical storm force winds (40 mph) between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. with gusts up to 60 mph. The winds will cause damage to trees and power lines, and power outages are likely. Tornadoes are very likely as well as flash flooding, and some areas will get as much as 10 inches of rain.

To ensure your safety, members of the Bulldog family are encouraged to prepare for the anticipated storm and to monitor local news and weather service reports.

For updates related to SC State, including receiving information on when classes will resume, faculty, staff and students should closely monitor the following communication platforms:

SC State Monitoring Hurricane Irma

In preparation for the possibility that Hurricane Irma may impact South Carolina, officials at SC State University are monitoring the path and potential impact of the hurricane to the state and to the campus.

While it is too early to determine the potential threat, a number of forecasting models predicts that Hurricane Irma will impact South Carolina early the week of September 11, causing flooding and strong hurricane-force winds.

We anticipate that forecasting models will improve as this week progresses and more will be known about Hurricane Irma’s path. As this information becomes available, officials will evaluate weather reports and will consider advisement from state and local emergency management agencies to make the best decisions that will help to ensure the safety of the campus community. The campus community will be notified in advance of any modification to campus operations.

Updates on weather-related issues and other emergencies will be available on the following platforms:

  • University’s homepage at www.scsu.edu
