Design better infrastructure with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from SC State

If the science behind roads, bridges, dams, utility systems, buildings, railroads and airports intrigues you, a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from South Carolina State University is right up your alley.

The Civil Engineering (CE) program prepares graduates to apply knowledge of mathematics and physics for analysis, design, and management of the civil infrastructural systems and assume careers as professional engineers. The Civil Engineering Program also offers a Fire Protection Engineering option.

Career Opportunities

A degree in Civil Engineering prepares the students for careers or graduate studies in:

  • Coastal and harbor engineering
  • Construction engineering
  • Earthquake engineering
  • Environmental engineering
  • Forensic engineering
  • Geotechnical and geoscience engineering
  • Highway engineering
  • Hydrology and hydraulics engineering
  • Materials science and engineering
  • Municipal or urban engineering
  • Structural engineering
  • Surveying
  • Transportation engineering
  • Water resources engineering

Resources for Learning and Leadership

At SC State, we provide hands-on experience and training to our Civil Engineering students through advanced and well-equipped labs related to all major branches of Civil Engineering, including Geotechnical, Transportation, Environmental, and Strength of Materials. Additionally, our student organizations, such as the ASCE and NSBE student chapter, offer excellent opportunities to engage and learn within the team, whether in your major or across other fields. Our Civil Engineering students participate in projects for student conferences, symposia, competitions, and various tournaments at both the state and national levels. This will further enable our students to develop networking skills with future employers, faculty experts, and industry leaders, both for job markets and higher studies.

Scholarship & Financial Aid Opportunities

SC State participates in all applicable federal and state financial aid programs, including the Pell Grant, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Work-Study, and all federal loan programs (Perkins, Stafford, Subsidized, Unsubsidized, and Parent Loans). South Carolina residents are eligible for South Carolina Tuition Grants, Palmetto Fellows, LIFE and HOPE scholarships, as well as SC State University General and Presidential Scholarships.

  • Graduates continue to apply information technologies in post-graduate work and their professions to the practice of civil engineering.
  • Graduates are able to conduct themselves in a professional and ethical manner and provide meaningful contributions to graduate work and industry.
  • Work and communicate effectively with colleagues at every level in the organization.

Civil Engineering Student Outcomes

A graduate with a Civil Engineering degree from SC State has the ability to:

  • Identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  • Apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
  • Communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
  • Recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
  • Function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
  • Develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
  • Acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
