Two South Carolina State University student teachers have received the $10,000 Wilhemenia B. Smith Scholarship, an award established by alumnus George Smith in honor of his late wife, Wilhemenia B. Smith, a longtime social studies teacher who dedicated more than 37 years to education.

Ahead of May 8’s Spring Commencement, SC State conducted its spring hooding ceremony for doctoral candidates in the Fine Arts Building’s Barbara A. Vaughn Recital Hall. A joint effort of the College of Graduate & Professional Studies and the College of Education, Humanities and Social Sciences (CEHSS), the ceremony recognized educators who completed their curriculum through the SC State Department of Educational Leadership.

17 senior cadets in SC State’s Army ROTC Bulldog Battalion commissioned as 2nd lieutenants during a ceremony held May 7 in the Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium. The ceremony was held ahead of the university’s Spring Commencement ceremony on May 8, when the cadets went on to receive their academic degrees.

That spirit of giving translated into significant financial support for the university, with reunion classes contributing a combined $2.3 million during the weekend. Combined with the more than $1.4 million raised during the Garnet & Blue Extravaganza on April 18, the reunion contributions added to a strong spring fundraising season in support of SC State students and university priorities.
