Dr. Akeem J. Brown is a visionary leader, public servant, and educational entrepreneur whose career spans over 15 years across education, policy, and nonprofit leadership. As the founder and CEO/Superintendent of Essence Preparatory Public School in San Antonio, Texas, he has transformed a bold vision into a thriving educational institution that centers equity, cultural identity, and academic excellence. With a deep-rooted commitment to social justice, Akeem has dedicated his professional life to building systems and spaces where underserved communities, particularly Black and Latino youth, can thrive both academically and socially.
His leadership journey began in public policy, where he served as chief of staff and policy advisor in the Texas legislature. There, he shaped key legislation and advocated for reform in education, public health, and criminal justice. This foundation in systems thinking and policy development now informs his work in education, where he combines grassroots engagement with strategic planning to build sustainable, community-driven solutions.
At Essence Prep, Akeem has overseen every phase of the school’s development, from charter authorization and facilities acquisition to team recruitment and curriculum design. His leadership reflects a rare blend of operational acumen and cultural sensitivity, ensuring that every student is seen, supported, and equipped to lead. Under his guidance, the school has become a model for holistic, identity-affirming education that prepares students not just to succeed academically, but to engage civically and lead confidently.
A first-generation college graduate and proud alumnus of South Carolina State University, Akeem embodies resilience, purpose, and excellence.
