Cash and cash equivalents are preferred by many donors, whether as an annual gift or pledged over several years. As a donor, you're entitled to a charitable deduction of up to 50 percent of your adjusted gross income. Any excess amount beyond this limit may be carried over as a deduction for up to five years. When sending a cash gift, please include a letter outlining the purpose of your contribution.

However, these gifts require special handling, so we encourage you to reach out to the Office of Planned Giving to explore the various options for structuring your gift. If you hold securities that have decreased in value, it's generally best to sell them to establish a tax loss and then donate the proceeds to SC State University.
