The AGB Institute is nationally recognized for developing senior leaders committed to advancing effective governance, institutional excellence and strategic leadership across higher education. Selection reflects both professional achievement and the potential to help shape the future of colleges and universities.

"Dr. Whitesides has dedicated his career to expanding educational opportunity, strengthening research and extension programs, and advancing South Carolina State University's land-grant mission," SC State President Alexander Conyers said. "His selection for this distinguished national cohort reflects the caliber of leadership he brings to our institution and positions him to contribute even more significantly to the future of higher education."

Throughout his career, Whitesides has demonstrated a commitment to educational opportunity, community engagement, public service and institutional advancement. At SC State, he has helped strengthen initiatives that connect the university's historic 1890 land-grant mission with the evolving needs of students, communities, agricultural stakeholders and economic development partners across South Carolina and beyond.

As vice president for public service and agriculture, he oversees the university's 1890 Research & Extension programs and has championed initiatives that expand access to educational resources, strengthen community partnerships, support workforce development and advance the university's public service mission. His work reflects the core values of the land-grant tradition through service, innovation, outreach and community impact.

"I am honored to join this exceptional group of higher education leaders from across the nation," Whitesides said. "The opportunity to learn from experienced presidents, trustees and peers while exploring innovative approaches to governance and institutional leadership will strengthen my ability to serve SC State and the communities that depend on our teaching, research and extension mission."

The eight-month institute brings together senior higher education leaders for immersive learning experiences focused on governance, presidential leadership, fiduciary responsibility, strategic planning and the challenges facing colleges and universities. Participants engage with sitting presidents, governing board members and nationally recognized experts while examining the evolving landscape of higher education.

Participation in the institute comes as Whitesides continues to expand his scholarly contributions through research examining institutional trust, governance effectiveness, strategic alignment and organizational performance within public and land-grant universities. His current work explores frameworks designed to strengthen institutional resilience, stakeholder confidence and long-term strategic capacity.

Whitesides holds a Doctor of Business Administration in international business from Argosy University, a Master of Science in business management from Southern Wesleyan University and a Bachelor of Science in computer science SC State. He has also completed executive leadership studies at Harvard University and Cornell University.

The 2026-27 AGB Institute cohort includes senior leaders from colleges, universities and higher education organizations across the United States who are preparing to lead institutions through a rapidly changing higher education environment.

South Carolina State University congratulates Whitesides on this distinguished achievement and looks forward to the continued impact of his leadership, scholarship and service on the university and the communities it serves.
