SC State Army ROTC to commission new officers on Wednesday, Dec. 10

ORANGEBURG, S.C. South Carolina State University’s Army ROTC Bulldog Battalion will commission its newest 2nd lieutenants during a ceremony set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, in the Garnet & Blue Room of the Kirkland W. Green Student Center.

The commissioning ceremony is a milestone event for graduating cadets as they take the oath of office and transition from students to officers in the U.S. Army.

Lt. Col Herbert Gamble Jr. will deliver the keynote address. A 2003 graduate of SC State, Gamble earned his bachelor’s degree in family and consumer science/business before completing a master’s degree in management leadership from Webster University in 2015.

The Scranton, South Carolina, native has served more than 20 years in the South Carolina Army National Guard in roles ranging from platoon leader and company commander to his current position as product manager for Command Post Modernization / Tactical Edge & Compute.

His extensive military career includes service during Hurricane Katrina recovery operations, a deployment to Afghanistan, and multiple leadership positions at the National Guard Bureau.

On Thursday, Dec. 11, the newly commissioned 2nd lieutenants will receive their degrees from SC State. The university will conduct Fall 2025 Commencement Exercises beginning at 10 a.m. in Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
