Denim Day at SC State in 2024.
Denim Week activities continue through Friday to promote awareness and support for
survivors.
ORANGEBURG, S.C. — South Carolina State University will observe Denim Day on Wednesday, April 29, with
a campus event focused on raising awareness of sexual violence prevention and supporting
survivors.
Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to wear denim and gather at 1 p.m. at the
Counseling & Self-Development Center for a brief discussion and group photo as a visible
show of solidarity.
Denim Day is part of Denim Week at SC State, which runs from April 27 through May
1. The weeklong observance is designed to engage the campus community in education,
awareness and prevention efforts surrounding sexual violence while encouraging support
for survivors.
Denim Day is part of a global movement that began in 1999 after members of the Italian
Parliament protested a high court ruling that overturned a rape conviction, citing
the victim’s clothing. The protest sparked international outrage and helped launch
an annual campaign emphasizing that clothing is never consent.
At SC State, Denim Week is led by the Counseling & Self-Development Center in collaboration
with the Office of Equal Opportunity/Title IX, Social Work Program and Brooks Health
and Wellness Center. Organizers say the events are intended to encourage dialogue,
challenge harmful narratives and promote a campus culture grounded in respect and
support.
Denim Day is held each year on the last Wednesday of April, with activities continuing
through the end of the week.
